What is Emo FAQ for Beginners
Have you heard the term Emo thrown around a lot recently? If you have and are currently wondering what it is exactly, then I can answer all of your questions. In short, Emo is the latest hair and fashion trend that kids are following.
Although Emo is classed as a fashion trend, it is very much a combination of many things including the makeup, hairstyles, clothes, music and attitude. To be a real Emo kid then you need to have all of these things thrown together with a look that is usually very dark and rather somber.
Emo kids love dark clothes, emo hairstyles and emo makeup and usually the blacker the better. Black lipstick is often worn with the essential black eyeliner on both the upper and lower eye lids. The look can also be completed with black nail varnish.
The same black color applies for clothes with Emo kids as well. Skinny jeans, in black of course, with skinny t-shirts and perhaps a “hoody” with a band logo is generally the option of choice and the shoes that tend to be the most fashionable right now are the Vans slip-on style trainers that are black and white in checked.
The attitude of a real Emo kid is generally dark and somber, much like the outfit and they also love to spend a lot of time by themselves in a dark room writing poetry and meaningful song lyrics. This may seem like a generalization and in sorts it is, but this tends to be the hobby of choice for many Emo kids.

That is untrue. Emo is short for emotional and to be emo you are very emotional and you are going through hard times. Emo’s are only popular because of the way they dress but that is not the meaning of emo.
So you said earlier that emos sit in dark rooms and write song lyrics, uh uh i dont think soo. So the people in the pictures are emo’s right? and are supposingly supposed to be in a ”dark room” and writing song lyircs and suposingly choose to sit alone, yes, some of them do that but that doesnt mean all of us sit alone in dark rooms and jot down song lyrics, PFF before you go posting SHYIET about us on the internet you should learn more. -.-

omg, emo IS short for emotoinal and you don’t have to look or act like some emo poser to be one….for example my hair isnt dyed black and I don’t wear all black either. I wear what I want when I want, even if others don’t like it. And ppl still say I am emo. I mean you can suspect I am cuz compared to the preppy, jock meatheads at my skool I am….and my hair is always done in a kindof ‘emo scene’ look I guess
But you can be classified emo on the type of music you like and the style you like, I guess…But I always say no two emos are alike
And most ppl think you HAVE to cut youself to be emo….And those ppl are ridiculas. My friend cuts her wrists and I don’t but we are both emo…Cutting yourself is a choice ppl make to feel something other than they’re emotions they deal with everyday…But ppl do this for different reasons.
Anyway you can be a bad*** emo or a shy sensitive emo. It all depends on what your like and how you think towards life, ppl,your personality, and the world.

Look, I don’t dress emo, maybe a skinny here andhoodie there, but I don’twear a crapload of eyliner and mascara and I don’t have the dyed hair and wear tons of black. BUT I ONLY listen to emo punk, and I’m very emotional. I write poems and I use to cut. But what? Just cuz I don’t look emo means I’m not??? And just cuz I have friends and am social means I’m posing??? PUH-LEEZ!! Next time do better research before you put all this bullshit on the internet…
emo doesnt mean emotional.. emo is short of emotive punk/rock and everyone who is saying how bad of a job they did of describing an emo and what they do, you need to understand that they never said that all emos wear eyeliner or wear dark clothes, they are apparently talking about how most of the trend tends to look.
hey, im kinda tryin to go emo. i already thin, plus i luv dark clothes, and i listen to emo punk and alternative rock/screamo. I got the attitude, but i just need 2 grow my hair out now. if u have any tips on how 2 style my hair, plz reply wit a comment. im a blonde guy, soo its kinda a disadvantage. my hair is purty straight, just dnt know whut 2 do wit it. any advice wuld be great.
I think this is all a joke, this “emo” classification that people are clearly not reluctant to include themselves in. To me, when people are stating that other are posers, i think they are no better. Are people truly and honestly like that? Do these haircuts and outfits actually appeal to these people- or are they trying to live up to what other “emo” people are expecting you too? All these people saying they are “emo,” from what i learned, are just the same as the..jocks or nerds, you label yourself! I believe that an “emo” is not a label nor a fashion or music taste, it is a way a person is. A person who is truly appealed and drawn to an emotional way of life! It is not something where you go prancing along to anyone who will listen that you are an “emo.” Your not. You are a poser. In my eyes, you are a judgmental person with a stereotypical persona.

To levy : i say you use your, er, straight hair, i presume that’s what you meant?, to your advantage. You don’t have to straighten your hair, or try experimenting with it. come up with something of your own, it will be your signature look.

wow, not true. really. Emo, tends to be more of a style. and with all styles, you also have all personality types. really, i would classify myself as emo. but its crap like this on the internet and such that is posted by those who dont know, that gets to others who dont. Generally, noone will ever post anything that will satisfy everone, because you cant classify a personality type by what somone whares. (excuse spelling, not my thing)
To me, emo is being yourself and expressing your feelings through what you wear,how you dress, and the music you listen to. Basically it means not giving a f about what people think.
Alright, first of all, Emo means “Emotional” and “Emotionally Depressed” Not “Emotional punk”. Emo means that you are emotional, so most teens are “Emo.” It doesn’t mean you have to cut yourself, or even wear black. You (even though it’s not my personal taste) can wear pinks and yellows. You don’t have to sit alone and write poetry or “meaningful song lyrics” at all. In fact, I don’t sit alone, and I’m Emo. So before you go and start saying stuff about us, you need to get your facts straight.
you guys all have it wrong. I dont like to classify really, cuz that kinda makes people sound poserish…granted emo is a style, but you cant just randomly wake up and decide to be emo. you either are or your not. did you grow up with alot of enemies, no money, bad family, horrible town…then you have alot to be sad about, so you wear the darkest things you can find, and youve basically given up on the order of the world so you express your individuality by dressing uniquelly (different w.e). most people who have alot of friends, been spoiled, lifes been rlly good…turn out like..ass? thats how I view it. im one of like..4 emo kids in this town, tho we dont seem it were like dead on the inside from the way ppl have treated us for looking differently…wernt for hollywood undead dont know where wed be…we just like how we look, it makes us happy
to me emo and scene are essentially the same…scene is just happier. alot of emo kids live life a whole lot better than any prep, jock, nerd, w.e. emo kids friends are like…soo fun, i dont get why, there just so amazing to hang out with

the term emo does mean emotive punk/hardcore.. or its suposed to but todays media says its a fashion & now it is. emo has been around since the 80s. bands like Still Life, Moss Icon, Makara & Orcid are what created this term & style of music, over time it was used by mtv to sell. the sound changed the meaning was lost & now you kids like you are sprung on the fashion. i respect real emo. someone from Minor Threat (i dont remember who) after the band became defunct created Rites of Spring & the bassist from Moss Icon went on to play in a influential NYHC band called Born Against… anyways old school emo just sounds bad ass LONG LIVE JAWBREAKER!!!! so please stop listening to Fall Out Boy & learn whats up although i do like some fall out boy songs.. ‘Am i more than you barganed for yeah ive been dying to tell you anything cuz thats just who i am this week. lie in the grass next to the masuleium…..’ blah blah blah

Drone, thank you for stating THE TRUTH!!!! god, finally i’m not the only one! and i want fall out boy to die. i mean, their lyrics are sometimes good but not emo. and emo doesnt have anything to do with fashion or music at all. you can wear the brightest clothes and be emo. hell, you could wear hollister (i never will though) and still be emo. all it means is that youre shy and sensitive and dont mind showing it anyway you want be it poems or how you talk. its not depression and cutting, it doesnt have anything to do with makeup. thats a choice. im tired of people competing of who has the biggest fan or spike in the back of their head or the longest swoop. whatever. mtv murders everything on top of that

Actual emo is short for “emotionaly disturbed”. And although you may have the emo style, that doesn’t make you truly emo. If your emo then you are usualy depressed, sometimes very interested in love or have a broken heart, emos usualy listen to sad songs, love songs, breakup songs, or “freedom” and expressing yourself type music with a dark, rock and/or screamo style. “Scene” style actuality fits “happy”, or just not depressed kids better.

You are soooo right! Emo is not cutting yourself! There are emo cutters, but you don’t have to be a cutter to be emo! And anyone who thinks emos don’t have feelings is just well… STUPID!!! Emos have even stronger emotions than other people! That’s why there emo-tional! Duh!

Every bloody kid in my school that are, i suppose “normal” really do not get that its a type of music style, which now has become a trend. I get accused of being emo because of what i listen to like MCR, and how i dress. hey ^^… The author of that description abt emo kids is absolutely wrong about emo life and hobby. Not all emo kids are sad and stay alone in a black room writing lyrics. And i know a lottt of emo kids…btw i’m emo too ^^… they are heppy…wear happy colors and enjoy life. They also listen to emo music and laugh a lot on posers that pretend to be “emo.” Emo kids are human beings like all ppl from the world. So stop this bull**** abt our lifestyle. Allot of the youth of today are rather small-minded… Not in a bad way, but they will grab anything that attracts them, and they will use a term or style until the meaning and definition is distorted to a point of where its something entirely new. You just need to take a peak at what I mean by this, and do a little research of something’s past.
It is also the fact people have the most ignorant arguments over something so simple that it manages to show the idiocracy of today and tomorrow.
Emo is gloomy, rainy days, cold air, finding comfort in darkness, its independent, loud, unique, and proud, its emotional, a movement, and its archaic.
Scene is identical to Emo, but Scene, instead of being so gloomy, its about the parties, being peppy and happy, cheerful, its new and fresh, and a modern style.
Goth is ancient, and what inspired the Emo movement, which led to Scene.
I suspect Punk may have some inspiration from Scene and Emo, mostly Scene, but I do not know on this one, haven’t stepped into this field or done much research.
I saw a few mentioned “Emo Music”, I hear allot of controversy over this one, and I see more battles on this than I do with religion or politics… H.I.M is classified as a “Emo” band, let me gather some lyrics from them:

That is your average Emo music, now, I used to own over 10 different CDs from multiple bands, all of which was ‘Emo Music’ and they were like this, that’s 10 different bands including HIM. No, not everybody writes poems, I know I can’t, it doesn’t interest me, but I do prefer the cold and darkness over the warmth and sunshine, despite the fact warmth is just one thing I can crave. Despite how it may sound, I do not cut myself and I enjoy/love life, the cutting and suicidal side of things does stick around the Emo, what I’m going to call, culture, but merely because of emotional turmoil. Because of a few people on the suicide trip, the New Age Society has created a stereo type of Emo, and have shown a great deal of brutality without mercy because of it.
Prep, a prep is somebody pretending to be something they are not, if you are Scene, even if you don’t wear the colors but you live the colors, yet claim to be Emo… Then I’m sorry to say, but your a prep.
All of what I’m saying is politically correct and out of pure technicality. If you wish to comment on what I said, please come up with more than “I’m emo, so I know” or “My friends are emo so know”.

I do not fully agree with everything said on this website however, as some of it is purely stereo type based, but even stereo types, though they may be exaggerated, have a certain extent of truth behind them, at least during one point of time. For example, “All emo’s are sissies” harsh stereo type, when put into those words… But it holds truth, you are not bound to your gender or sex, but when they say “sissies” it means you are all emotional and cry too easy… Which is true for the majority of Emo.

Lastly… for all of you… Emo is not just a music style of the 21st, or even 20th century that evolved into a hair style and dressing style… It has been around for much longer, a few of my sources argues that it dates to even the 70s instead of the 80s, and was a culture/lifestyle before even I or the majority of you, were born. Music had a great role in its development, but has not been the core heart of it at all. Seems there was more than just them “Tree huggin’ hippies” back then ;p.

You are really in the dark about being emo. Emo is not about fashion. The fashion extended from the state of mind that emo is. Emo kids can range from preps to nerds to band geeks. We don’t all sit in the dark. We don’t all write songs. We don’t all enjoy darkenss and black. If someone being emo doesn’t know this, they are not emo.
